Kantina Bejko Kallmet (2024)
Kantina Bejko / Përmet (Southern Albania)

The Elegant Wild Berry and Spice Native
Luminous, translucent ruby-red color. The nose is highly distinctive and aromatic, bursting with fresh wild strawberries, sour cherries, and pomegranate, closely followed by complex layers of black pepper, dried Mediterranean herbs, and a faint rustic hint of leather. Medium-bodied and wonderfully smooth on the palate, featuring a bright, energetic line of acidity, fine-grained tannins, and a clean, dry, savory finish.
⭐ (True to Bejko's clean style, this is fermented without heavy, over-extracted oak manipulation. At a balanced 13% ABV, it is exceptionally fresh and incredibly smooth on the system).
Slow-roasted lamb (tavë kosi), grilled veal chops, seasoned Mediterranean meatballs, or an assortment of medium-aged local cheeses.
If you want to taste the grape that many consider to be Albania's finest red varietal, this is your bottle. Kallmet completely avoids the heavy, jammy, over-extracted style of modern global reds. Instead, it plays an incredibly elegant game that sits somewhere between a rustic Pinot Noir and a spicy Sangiovese. It delivers an absolute basket of bright red forest fruits up front, but finishes with this fantastic, gritty, white-pepper spice that gives it a beautiful local personality. It's a gorgeous, unpretentious food wine.
