Lanzarote - Land of Fire and Wine

Stepping onto Lanzarote from Fuerteventura immediately transports you to a dramatically different world—an island shaped by its raw, recent volcanic past. This is an island defined by colossal lava flows, creating surreal landscapes of black rock, dramatic coastal cliffs, and surprisingly inviting black sand beaches. It’s an absolute dream for cyclists, with smooth roads winding through lunar-like terrain and breathtaking coastal views at every turn.

Our first two days on Lanzarote were a testament to its unique character. On Day 1, we started our exploration along the captivating "Salt Coast." The Salinas de Janubio offered a stunning mosaic of colorful salt pans, a testament to traditional harvesting methods against a dramatic volcanic backdrop. Further north, Los Hervideros showcased nature's raw power, with powerful Atlantic waves crashing into volcanic caves, creating a mesmerizing "boiling" effect. We rounded off the afternoon in El Golfo, where the emerald-green lagoon, Charco de los Clicos, nestled within a half-submerged crater, left us speechless.

Day 2 began with an early start at

. Arriving promptly at 9:00 AM was a strategic move, allowing us to avoid the inevitable crowds and tour buses filled with cruise ship passengers. The "Fire Mountains" tour by coach through the heart of the lava fields was an otherworldly experience, complete with fascinating geothermal demonstrations that truly bring the island's fiery past to life.

No visit to Lanzarote would be complete without delving into its incredibly unique viniculture. We indulged in a delightful wine tasting at Bodega La Geria, where vines are meticulously grown in individual stone-lined pits (zocos) to protect them from the relentless winds. The resilience of these Malvasía Volcánica grapes, thriving in such harsh conditions, is truly inspiring.

We spent our first night in Playa Blanca, opting for a typical resort facility. Instead of lingering at the hotel, we chose to immerse ourselves in the town's atmosphere, enjoying an amazing meal on a patio overlooking the bustling harbor and serene beaches. For our second night, we moved to an incredible Air B&B called "Polar Star Villa" in Tahiche. We absolutely adored this location, the facility itself, and the wonderfully welcoming hosts. It proved to be a perfect, centrally located base with incredibly easy access to all the island's diverse sites, making our exploration both convenient and comfortable.
