Hello, World! (Or, More Specifically, Hello, Las Palmas!)

Well, folks, we did it. After months of packing, planning, panic attacks, and selling off everything but the cat (who, surprisingly, didn’t fit in the carry-on), we’re officially Unemployed and Abroad. Our first stop on this grand, slightly terrifying adventure? Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands.
And let us tell you, it's an adjustment. Like, "waking up and not immediately checking work emails" weird. "Having a beach one block away on a Tuesday morning" weird. This isn't a vacation, apparently. This is... life. We're still adjusting to the idea that we don't have to go back to work next week. Send help (and maybe more tapas).
The Canaries: Not Just for Your Grandma's Cruise Anymore
Before you start frantically Googling "Where are the Canary Islands and are they full of actual canaries?", let us drop some knowledge. These aren't some forgotten specks in the Caribbean. We're talking about a volcanic archipelago lying just off the coast of Morocco, but proudly (and very Spanish-ly) belonging to Spain. Think Europe meets Africa, with a dash of "Did a volcano do that?" They're famous for eternal spring weather, dramatic black sand beaches, and a history rich with pirates, explorers, and a rather significant visit from Christopher Columbus (he topped up his water barrels here before heading to "discover" America). Also, the unique indigenous culture of the Guanches is fascinating—they lived in caves and apparently worshiped dogs (Who can argue with that??). The Canary Islands are named after dogs (Canis), not the little yellow bird. It's basically a tropical paradise without the tropical humidity and malaria. You’re welcome.
Gran Canaria: The "Miniature Continent" (and Our New Backyard)
Within this island chain, we landed on Gran Canaria, often called a "miniature continent" because it literally has everything: lush forests, desert dunes, dramatic mountains, and, of course, our current abode: the urban center of Las Palmas.
Las Palmas is the buzzing capital, a proper city, complete with traffic, charming old quarters, and—crucially for our sanity—the absolutely spectacular Playa de Las Canteras. This isn't just "a beach"; it's a massive, golden crescent of sand protected by a natural reef, making it perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or simply confirming all our recent life choices while soaking up the sun. It's a proper city beach that would put many resort towns to shame. And yes, it's literally one block from our temporary abode. We're not complaining. Much.
Our Soft Landing: Learning to Adult (Abroad)
Choosing Las Palmas as our first base was a stroke of genius, mostly accidental. It's the perfect "training wheels" for this whole world travel thing. We can stumble through Spanish lessons, recover from the sheer exhaustion of selling everything we owned, and slowly start to unpack the ridiculous amount of "essential" gear we lugged halfway across the Atlantic. (Spoiler: We didn't need half of it. Send thoughts and prayers for our sore shoulders.)
It's been a whirlwind of adjusting to siestas, dodging aggressive pigeons, and trying to order coffee without sounding like we’re asking for directions to the nearest alien abduction site. But with that ocean breeze, the endless sunshine, and the promise of more amazing food (and wine—did we mention the wine?), we're slowly but surely easing into the glorious chaos of life on the road.
Stay tuned for more updates, questionable decisions, and probably a few more pictures of food. Cheers from the Canary Islands!
